Geophysics

Geophysics is the study of the Earth using the principles of physics, mathematics, and computing. It helps us understand the structure, processes, and evolution of our planet, from the Earth's core to its atmosphere and oceans.  Geophysicists use advanced technologies to explore natural resources, monitor environmental change, assess natural hazards, and support the transition to sustainable energy.

What will you learn?

  • Earth Structure and Dynamics: the composition and behaviour of the Earth's crust, mantle, and core.

  • Seismology: the study of earthquakes, seismic waves, and the processes that shape the Earth's interior.

  • Geodynamics and Plate Tectonics: understanding how continents move, mountains form, and geological hazards occur.

  • Geophysical Exploration Methods: using seismic, magnetic, electrical, gravitational, and electromagnetic techniques to investigate the subsurface.

  • Geology and Earth Materials: rocks, minerals, geological history, and Earth's evolution.

  • Environmental Geophysics: monitoring groundwater, pollution, land stability, and environmental change.

  • Climate and Atmospheric Science: understanding Earth's climate systems and environmental processes.

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing: analysing and visualising spatial and environmental data.

  • Data Science and Scientific Computing: modelling Earth systems, analysing large datasets, and using specialist software.

  • Fieldwork and Research Skills: collecting and interpreting geophysical data in real-world environments.
