Find out whether you need a visa to study in the UK by checking at the UK government website.

Immigration regulations are subject to change on a regular basis, so it's important to check the latest guidance at Study UK and also the UKVI website for the most up-to-date information. The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website is another important site for you to check – it has clear, useful information about visas.

Phase 1: Preparation

1. Recieve your CAS

Gather your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from the university that you have received your unconditional offer.

2. English ability

Gather evidence of your English language ability.

3. Financial proof

Gather bank statements showing you can sustain living costs and tuition.

English language requirements

You can prove your knowledge of English by:

passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved SELT provider
having a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18.

4. Submission

Complete the official UK government application online.

5. Surcharge & fees

Pay the Immigration Health Surchage (IHS) fee to access the National Health Service (NHS).

Special note for EU/EEA students: If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you may be able to apply for a refund for the cost of the IHS. Check the GOV.UK website to find out if you are eligible to do so. Please also note that deciding to do paid part-time work in the UK during your studies could impact your eligibility for a refund.

Phase 3: Finalisation

6. Biometrics

Attend your appointment at a Visa Application Centre to provide fingerprints and a photo.

Special note for EU/EEA students: You may be able to use the ’UK Immigration: ID Check’ app instead of a physical appointment.

7. Decision

Wait for your decision email and obtain your eVisa after it is approved.
